The association has gained credibility with Government, local authorities, and all those concerned with safety in the occupational handling and removal of asbestos and any other airborne hazardous materials. British Occupational Hygiene Society
Every year in Britain alone, more than two million people experience symptoms of ill-health believed to have been caused or made worse by work and the latest figures published by the Health & Safety Executive show that an estimated 30 million working days are lost annually due to work-related ill-health (compared to nine million due to workplace injury).

Established since 1953, BOHS’s aim is to help to reduce work-related ill-health by promoting public and professional awareness, good practice and standards, and by researching and advancing education in the science of occupational health and hygiene. The Health and Safety Executive
The Health and Safety Executives (HSE) role is to help the Health and Safety Commission (HSC - whose role is to protect everyone in Great Britain against risks to health or safety arising out of work activities) by ensuring that risks to people's health and safety from work activities are properly controlled. Tackling the problem of asbestos is a huge undertaking, but the HSC regards it as one of its highest priorities.

Asbestos killed 50,000 people in the 30 years to 1998, and the toll will continue to rise because illnesses resulting from work with the material can take up to 60 years to manifest themselves’. HSC/HSE is committed to reduce the levels of exposure to asbestos.
